Let’s face it, who doesn’t love glowing skin? Everyone is in search of that beautiful glow, but are you taking care of your skin – from the inside out? As we have heard so many times, beauty is literally skin deep.

While you can’t control your age, you can control other causes that increase the ageing process, such as overexposure to sunlight, poor dietary habits, stress and smoking.

But, enough about what may be causing your skin to be less radiant, below are tips on how to achieve beautiful glowing skin.

Eat healthily and exercise

Yes, we know this is drummed into our heads, yet we may not always have the time and energy to prepare proper meals or even head to the gym. However, by simply giving up a few things and drinking more water throughout each day, you will start to see and feel the difference.

Aim to drink 6-8 glasses of water daily. Water helps to flush out the toxins that cause bad skin and dehydration. A great test to see whether your body is dehydrated is to press on your skin on your arm. If that skin shows white, this means your body is dehydrated and you need to up your intake of water.

Because we know it’s difficult to always remember to drink water, opt to drink herbal teas instead of your normal tea and coffee. Remember, caffeine dehydrates the body. You can also add small optimizations to your diet that have been proven to help with your skin, such as omega 3 supplements. This way, you’ll know your diet isn’t negatively impacting you.

What you eat in private you wear in public

Try to steer clear of junk foods. Highly processed products serve little if any benefit to your health. Healthy proteins, fruit and vegetables boost the antioxidants in your skin –  adding more of these items to your diet will help you get that glowing skin in no time!

Try to eat as much Omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin E and C and fibre-rich foods as possible. These vitamins help to boost your skins longevity. You can find these vitamins in fish, nuts, cashew nuts, almonds, walnuts and fruit. Try and cut down on your sugar intake as this unhealthy foodstuff simply causes ageing and dull skin.

Exercise, exercise, exercise!

Not only will you feel great, but your skin will love you for it too! Cardio workouts stimulate blood flow which results in beautiful, glowing skin!

Maintain a consistent skin routine

Following a proper skin regime daily is a must! You need to make sure to wash your face day and night. Throughout the day, oil, makeup and dirt accumulates and clogs up your pores. You should never skip cleansing your skin at night after a long day of being exposed to environmental pollutants.

Makeup remover is your best friend! Not only does it remove the excess makeup that clogs your pores, but it will also help prevent from getting bacteria from your makeup onto your pillows – leading to skin irritation.

Remember, try to use a gentle remover on the eye area, and always wash your face thereafter. Never rub your face dry, instead pat it gently until it is dry.

Toner

Use a toner to remove any excess dirt and oil your cleanser may have missed before applying any moisturiser. Make sure to apply toner to the areas of your face that tend to break out.

Moisturise

Use a light moisturiser during the day to help with oil build up. You need to make sure your evening moisturising has repairing compounds to help your skin heal from the daily skin stresses. When moisturising, don’t forget your neck and décolletage area, as this becomes very dry and wrinkles over time.

Sunscreen

This is the most important product to own and use daily! Wearing sunscreen is the single easiest way to prolong healthy, glowing skin and look younger for life. It’s always easier to avoid sun damage than to fix it thereafter. Remember, it only takes 15 minutes to get a sunburn, so be prepared! Look for sunscreens that offer broad-spectrum protection to guard against UVA rays as well as UVB rays. When shopping for your foundation or tinted moisturiser, make sure to buy one with SPF coverage.

Exfoliate

You need to exfoliate 1-2 times per week. This will help get rid of dead skin cells. Make sure you pick the best exfoliator for your skin type – oily-skinned ladies will benefit from a gentle scrub that unclogs pores. Dry skin works well with chemical exfoliators containing fruit acids that target the deeper layers of the skin, while more sensitive skin types should opt for an enzyme exfoliator that won’t aggravate skin.

Sleep well

Lastly, make sure to get enough sleep. You should be sleeping for 7-8 hours per day. There is a reason why they call it beauty sleep after all!
